PREFACE
Mozart's opera Don Giovanni (1787) follows the medieval story of Don Juan, who breaks into Donna Anna's bedroom while she's engaged to Don Ottavio. Anna's father, a respectable old military man known as the Commendatore, challenges Juan to a duel to defend his daughter's honor. Juan wins, but the Commendatore's high rank in Seville inspires a cemetery memorial in the form of a statue, which eventually comes to life. In the opera's last scene, the statue arrives at a fashionable ball to physically throw Juan into the Wery pit. Shaw loved Mozart's music but hated the libretto's Catholic morality (Lorenzo da Ponte wrote the words); Man and Superman is his updated and corrected version of the story.

This play was a last-minute replacement. Kevin Karrick gets the iron man award for memorizing the largest part in Westerm Literature in four weeks and Barry Horwitz gets the "sleep? we don't need no stinkin' sleep" award for staying up 'til two am three nights a week convincing me that folks would sit through a four hour play on hard metal chairs in South Berkeley.
