Shotgun Theatre Lab presents HEAVY DAYS, a collaborative ensemble piece
about four women who resist and succumb to the allure of madness. The
mundane rituals of Christmas dinners and birth control, the unchallenging
wisdom of self-help books and Martha Stewart, bloom into an abstract,
whimsical and provocative theatrical experience. HEAVY DAYS runs on December
8, 9, 15, 16, 18, and 19 at 8pm with a press opening on December 9, at La
Val's Subterranean, 1834 Euclid, Berkeley.
Spearheaded by principal collaborators Erin Gilley and Evren Odcikin, the
ensemble created HEAVY DAYS through a series of improvisational sound and
movement exercises inspired by the work of Joseph Chaikin and the Open
Theatre. The ensemble performers are Erin Carter, Erin Gilley, Lisa Patten,
and Sara Razavi. The production team includes Marc Blinder (sound and video)
and Connie Hwong (costumes).
Erin Gilley has just finished directing David Mamet's The Woods for Theatre
in the Woods. In the Bay Area, she has previously worked with TheatreFirst
and Isis Arts. Her previous acting credits include Much Ado About Nothing
(Beatrice), Bus Stop (Cherie), How I Learned to Drive (Lil' Bit), Barefoot
in the Park (Corie), and Oleanna (Carol). Her directing experience includes
Whirligig, The House of Yes, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon
Marigolds, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Evren Odcikin has worked with Shotgun as set designer for this year's Water
Principle, and as assistant director for Mother Courage and Her Children.
His previous directing credits include How I Learned to Drive, Baby and the
Bathwater, Medea, and Macbeth. Evren works as a freelance graphics designer
and has designed posters and publicity materials for numerous shows in New
York, Los Angeles, Princeton, and the Bay Area.
The Shotgun Theatre Lab is a program of the Shotgun Players committed to
fostering the creation of new works through the mentorship of emerging
theater artists. In providing an explorative forum for theater artists, we
also create a showcase of dynamic and experimental work that opens new
avenues of learning, imagination and form for audiences and artists alike.
The Shotgun Theatre Lab removes the emphasis on succeeding financially, and
instead promotes alternative models of successful theatre.
